5 Best Places to Snowshoe in Australia

If you happen to be traveling to the "Down Under" or you're local we've checked out the top-rated recommendations when it comes to snowshoeing in Australia. Here's the list we came up with that are sure to be winners:

Kosciuszko National Park

Kosciuszko National Park has the highest peak in Australia which means it also has some of the most beautiful snowscapes in the country. Mount Kosciuszko stretches all the way from Southeast Australia through Victoria before reaching the sea. One of the best places to start snowshoeing is at the ski Village of Thredbo at the base of Kosciuszko National Park.

The ski Village of Thredbo has a decidedly European feel since it gained its initial popularity after World War II when many Europeans came to settle in Australia. This Village makes the perfect base camp for families looking for a winter wonderland holiday as well as experienced snowshoe hikers looking to track through the snow. It's going to give you access to all of the amenities that you look for as well as ski lifts up to the mountain.

Perisher Valley

Are you a fan of getting outdoors, but you don't want to leave behind the excitement of big-city crowds?

Perisher Valley is a ski resort that's known for getting very busy during the holiday season. If you're looking to get outdoors and meet new friends, Perisher Valley is a great place for snowshoeing. It's mainly known for its skiing, but snowshoeing is getting increasingly popular there. It's a great way to dodge the heavy crowds that often pack the ski lifts and enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery Australia has to offer.

Mt. Saint Gwinear & Baw Baw Village

Known as one of the best examples of just how flexible snowshoeing can be, Mt Saint Gwinear and Baw Baw Village is known for its challenging snowshoeing trails that are best reserved for experts, but it's also known for being one of the best family-friendly winter resorts in Australia. Depending on your skill level and the experience you want, you can find what you're looking for at Mt Saint Gwinear and Baw Baw Village.

The trails for more experienced snowshoers are often barely marked and full of challenges that will reward even the most seasoned snowshoer. Families, children, and people looking for a more relaxing experience can also find casual snowshoe trails perfect for a relaxing trip. It's best to wear super lightweight snowshoes to relieve stress from long trails.

Dead Horse Gap

Don't let the name scare you, Dead Horse Gap is an accessible snowshoeing route. This is also some of the best terrain or forgetting to see snow gum trees during the winter. Dead Horse Gap is a full day hike that will take you through beautiful snow gum trees until you reach a ridgeline where you can watch skiers heading down the mountain.

You can also hike Dead Horse Gap in reverse. All you need to do is take the ski lift to the top of the bridge and then make your way back down to the ski village below.

Cascades Trail

Known as one of the best kept secrets when it comes to snowshoeing in Australia, Cascades Trail is a full day snowshoeing experience. You'll snowshoe along one side of a river and see scenic natural vistas as well as a few historical landmarks along the way. The Cascades Trail is also known for its brumbies. If you're looking to see some wild horses well you're snowshoeing, Cascades Trail is exactly what you're looking for.
